Sure, it’s the time “pumpkin spice” comes to life but when fall rolls around there are lots of other great flavors that complement the season as well. Some are familiar (like apple and cinnamon) and there are others you might not have considered.
While we may be obsessed with pumpkin during fall (and for good reason), try these fall flavors whether you’re baking or making delicious seasonal drinks:
- Apple Cinnamon: We start with an obvious one, but this simple combination is both wonderful on its own (as in sliced apples dusted in cinnamon) and as a complementary flavor in waffles, ice cream and pies.
- Ginger: The spicy-sweet bold flavor in ginger is perfect for colder months and it works equally well in sweet treats (apple and chocolate in particular) as well as savory dishes when paired with garlic and earthy spices like cumin and coriander.
- Pomegranate: You might not think about them often, but pomegranates are in season during the fall months and is a versatile fruit – it’s great on its own while being a great accompaniment in breakfast foods, salads, desserts and as a glaze for hot dishes (even guacamole).
- Butternut Squash: If you love pumpkin, then you’re sure to like butternut squash (or one of the many seasonal squash options). Its creamy flavor makes it perfect for soups and pasta, but it’s also a great addition to cheese-based dishes like mac-and cheese in particular.
- Chai: Like cinnamon and pumpkin spice, chai is a great, versatile fall flavor. It’s a natural in both cold and hot tea but also adds a boost of flavor to caramel, chocolate, oatmeal and cereal.
