The holidays are almost here so now is the perfect time to prep your home for seasonal activities and the colder temps. Here are some suggestions on some less obvious cleaning and repair tasks that won’t break your back (or your budget).
- Replace your sink faucet aerators - This is probably the easiest tasks and one that makes the biggest difference. Clogged aerators can reduce water flow and cause uneven spray power. Simply take out the aerators and soak them in white vinegar overnight.
- Caulk that tub! - Bathtub caulk isn’t something you think about often, but when it gets cracked or falls out it can result in mold and water damage. This is another one that’s an easy fix: after you scrape out the existing caulk and clean the surface, apply a bead of 100% silicone caulk along the joint.
- Lubricate your locks - No, that’s not a misprint. You really need to lubricate your door locks to keep them functioning properly. Simply get a bottle of powdered graphite from the hardware store and gently squirt a small amount into each keyhole. Graphite is a perfect lubricant since it doesn’t attract dust or dirt.
- Clean that garbage disposal - Your sink is sure to get a lot of use over the holidays so why not start with a clean garbage disposal. Just pour ½ cup of baking soda into the disposal, add a cup of white vinegar, which will create frothy bubbles. After the bubbles subside, pour a pot of boiling water down the disposal, and let sit for five minutes. Then turn on the water and disposal until it is rinsed clean.
